Jona twin daybed with trundle, grey velvet button tufting

By Yeti Beds Team, updated November 2026

Twin vs. twin XL is a length question. A twin mattress is 38 x 75 inches and a twin XL is 38 x 80, so the width matches and the twin XL is 5 inches longer. Twin XL suits anyone over about 6 feet, growing teens and most dorms. A twin suits kids' rooms, twin daybeds, most bunk beds and small rooms.

One catch before you shop: the frame decides the mattress, not the other way round. When you browse our twin beds, check the mattress size in each listing. The twin frames covered below list 39 x 74 to 39 x 76 inches of mattress space, while our twin XL bunk beds call for a 39 x 80 mattress on top.

Twin vs. twin XL: what is the difference between a twin and a twin XL?

The only difference between a twin and a twin XL is length. A twin XL is 5 inches longer than a twin, and both are 38 inches wide (Sleep Foundation notes it is sometimes 39).

Those 5 inches add 190 square inches of sleeping surface, 3,040 against 2,850. In feet, a twin is 3 ft 2 in by 6 ft 3 in and a twin XL is 3 ft 2 in by 6 ft 8 in. A twin XL is also the same length as a king, 80 inches. Both are single-bed sizes for one sleeper, not couples.

Is a daybed a twin or twin XL?

The twin daybeds we carry are built for a twin, not a twin XL, and each listing gives the exact mattress space. Check that number before you buy a mattress.

The Jona twin daybed with trundle listing gives inside dimensions (mattress size) of 39" W x 74" D, and the Midori twin size daybed listing gives the same 39" x 74". A twin XL mattress is 80 inches long, so it overshoots that space by 6 inches and will not fit inside either frame. The Jona listing also gives a pull-out twin-size trundle measuring 76" W x 41.3" D x 9.4" H. If trundles are new to you, here is what a trundle bed is.

Are daybed mattresses and twin mattresses the same size? A twin daybed takes a twin mattress, but each listing quotes the frame's own mattress space, so compare your mattress with that figure instead of relying on the word "twin" alone. Browse our daybeds and read each listing's inside dimensions.

Are bunk bed mattresses twin or twin XL?

Most bunk beds take a standard twin mattress, though twin XL bunks exist. Purple notes most bunk beds fit a twin of about 75 x 38 inches, and Casper says twin and twin XL are the most common bunk bed mattress sizes.

Two of our bunk beds are twin XL over queen. The Jason twin XL over queen bunk bed listing says its top bunk requires a 39" W x 80" L twin XL mattress. It measures 83" W x 63" D x 65" H overall and comes with a slat system, two drawers, a full-length guardrail and a built-in ladder. It can be used stacked or as two separate beds. The Limbra twin XL and queen bunk bed listing gives the same top-bunk requirement and the same 83" x 63" x 65" overall size. It has a metal slat system, a side ladder and a full-length guardrail on the top bed, and it is stacked-use only.

Will a twin XL mattress fit on a twin bed frame?

A twin XL mattress does not fit a fixed twin bed frame. It would hang about 5 inches off the end of the frame.

The exception is a frame built to extend. Casper says an extendable twin frame that reaches twin XL length should take a twin XL, while a static one likely means buying a new frame. The Levon twin storage bed listing gives inside dimensions (mattress size) of 39" W x 74" D, and it has four drawers and three open shelves. The Lucera twin bobbin bed listing gives a max mattress size of 39" W x 76" L and a recommended mattress thickness of 10". An 80-inch twin XL overshoots Levon's space by 6 inches and Lucera's by 4.

Can a 6-foot person sleep on a twin bed?

A 6-foot person can sleep on a twin, with about 3 inches to spare. Sleep Foundation says a twin is best suited to single sleepers under 6 feet and a twin XL to those over 6 feet, including children and teens who may grow past 6 feet.

A 6-foot sleeper is 72 inches, which leaves 3 inches of legroom on a twin and 8 on a twin XL, and the pillow takes a share of that. For tall sleepers the twin XL vs twin gap matters most: Sleep Foundation says people over 6 feet will want to consider a bed at least 80 inches long.

Do most college dorms have twin XL beds?

Yes, most college dorm beds are twin XL. Sleep Foundation says the majority of dorm beds are twin XL, though some are twin or full, and it advises checking with the college housing department. Twin XL is also popular in dorm rooms, per Sleepopolis.

Do twin sheets fit a twin XL?

No, twin sheets do not fit a twin XL mattress. The five extra inches of length are the problem, while twin XL sheets do work on a twin, with spare fabric to tuck in at the ends.

Twin XL bedding is also harder to find, and Sleep Foundation notes that accessories for less common sizes such as twin XL are more expensive, and that not every manufacturer offers twin XL mattresses, accessories or frames. Our view: if you buy a twin XL, buy twin XL sheets at the same time.

Who should not choose each size?

Skip the twin if you are over about 6 feet, or if you are furnishing a dorm where most beds are twin XL. Skip the twin XL if the bed is a daybed, a trundle or a standard twin bunk, or if two people will share it.

Frequently asked questions

Can two people sleep on a twin XL?

No. A twin XL is a single-sleeper bed, and Sleep Foundation says both twin sizes are only for single people. At 38 inches wide it leaves two adults very little room each. Two people who want a shared bed should look at a larger size, such as a queen, which is 60 inches wide.

Do two twin XL mattresses make a king?

Yes. Two twin XL mattresses side by side equal a standard king, measuring 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. Two standard twins also reach 76 inches wide but only 75 inches long, so that pair is 5 inches short of a king's length.

Is a twin XL big enough for an adult?

For one adult, yes. A twin XL is 80 inches long, which Sleep Foundation calls best for single sleepers over 6 feet, and a 6-foot adult has 8 inches to spare before the pillow. It is 38 inches wide, so it works as a single bed, not a shared one.

Can I put a twin XL mattress on a daybed?

Only if the listing's mattress space is 80 inches long. The Jona and Midori listings give inside dimensions of 39" x 74", so a twin XL will not fit those daybeds. Read the inside dimensions or max mattress size on any daybed or bed frame before you order a mattress.

Does a twin XL cost more than a twin?

For mattresses, usually. Sleep Foundation says twin mattresses are typically cheaper than twin XL, generally by $50 to $150 or so. That range applies to mattresses only, so check current prices on whichever mattress you are considering before you decide.

Our recommendation

Read the frame's listed mattress size first, then buy the mattress. For a twin daybed, a twin trundle or most bunk beds, buy a twin. Buy a twin XL for a dorm, for a teen likely to pass 6 feet, or for any frame whose listing calls for 80 inches, such as the top bunk of Jason or Limbra. Browse twin beds, daybeds and bunk beds and compare each listing's mattress space with the mattress you plan to use.
