Lucera mid-century queen bobbin bed in oak brown with a slatted wood headboard and turned bobbin details

By Yeti Beds Team, updated November 2026

Standard queen bed dimensions are 60 inches wide by 80 inches long for the mattress, or 5 ft x 6 ft 8 in (about 152 x 203 cm). A queen bed frame is usually a few inches bigger, about 62-65 x 82-85 inches, and you need roughly 2 to 3 feet of walking space on the three open sides.

That walkway figure depends on the source: Sleep Foundation suggests at least 24 inches, while dimensions.com gives 30 inches as a minimum and 36 as comfortable. Before you shop queen bed frames, remember that the frame, not the mattress, decides the fit. Three queen beds we sell list overall footprints from 63.5 x 82.5 to 65 x 85.8 inches.

What are the standard queen bed dimensions?

A standard queen mattress measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, or 5 feet by 6 feet 8 inches. In metric, those queen mattress dimensions are 152.4 x 203.2 cm, since one inch is exactly 25.4 mm; dimensions.com rounds it to 152 x 203 cm.

The sleeping surface is 4,800 square inches, or 33.3 square feet, and mattress height runs from 8 inches to over 14 inches. Two sleepers get 30 inches of width each. The queen is also the most popular size, accounting for the majority of US mattress sales, according to Casper. Choosing between sizes? See our full vs. queen guide.

How big is a queen bed frame?

A queen bed frame is usually 2 to 5 inches bigger than the mattress, so a typical one measures about 62-65 x 82-85 inches, according to Sleep Foundation. Max and Lily gives 62-65 x 82-86 inches.

Headboard-and-footboard frames add 3 to 5 inches, storage frames can add more, and Sleep Foundation advises checking with the manufacturer. Three of our listings give these queen bed frame dimensions:

  • Margo: the Margo queen platform bed frame listing gives 82.5" L x 63.5" W x 15" H overall, 3.5 inches wider and 2.5 inches longer than the mattress. Its 81 x 62 inch inner bed size leaves 2 inches of width and 1 inch of length around a standard queen.
  • Lucera: the Lucera queen bobbin bed listing gives 64" W x 84.8" D x 41.9" H, 4 inches wider and 4.8 inches longer. Max mattress size: 61 x 81.1 inches.
  • Cherene: the Cherene four-poster queen bed listing gives 65" W x 85.8" D x 86.5" H, 5 inches wider and 5.8 inches longer. Max mattress size: 61 x 81.1 inches.

On the floor that is about 36.4 sq ft (Margo), 37.7 sq ft (Lucera) and 38.7 sq ft (Cherene), against 33.3 sq ft for the mattress. Margo and Lucera fall inside Sleep Foundation's typical range. Cherene is at the top of the width range and 0.8 inches past the length range, but inside Max and Lily's.

Our view: measure the room against the frame's listed overall dimensions, not 60 x 80. Low platform beds like Margo add the least floor space of these three.

How tall is a queen bed?

A queen bed's height is the frame plus a mattress of 8 to over 14 inches. Frame heights vary much more:

  • Margo lists 15 inches overall on 11-inch legs.
  • Lucera lists 12.3 inches to the top of the slats, so its listed recommended 10-inch mattress puts the sleeping surface at about 22.3 inches. The headboard reaches 41.9 inches.
  • Cherene lists 86.5 inches to the top of its bobbin posts.

Leesa notes many standard headboards are roughly 48 to 60 inches tall and four-posters can go well beyond, so check your ceiling height too. Under an 8-foot ceiling, Cherene leaves 9.5 inches; measure the ceiling and any fan or light. Margo and Lucera both list no box spring needed; see do you need a box spring for more.

What size room do you need for a queen bed?

A queen bed needs a room about 10 feet wide by 9 feet 2 inches deep with the headboard on a wall, using dimensions.com's 30-inch minimum clearance on the three open sides. Its 36-inch comfortable clearance takes that to 11 feet by 9 feet 8 inches.

Sleep Foundation generally suggests about 24 inches between the bed and each wall or piece of furniture. Max and Lily says at least 10 x 11 feet with 36 inches around the bed. Dimensions.com gives a minimum queen bedroom area of roughly 106 square feet, rising to 128-131 square feet with a closet and desk.

Room size from each frame's listed queen bed measurements (headboard-wall width x depth):

Bed 30 in clearance 36 in clearance
Mattress only, 60 x 80 in 10 ft x 9 ft 2 in 11 ft x 9 ft 8 in
Margo, 63.5 x 82.5 in 10 ft 3.5 in x 9 ft 4.5 in 11 ft 3.5 in x 9 ft 10.5 in
Lucera, 64 x 84.8 in 10 ft 4 in x 9 ft 6.8 in 11 ft 4 in x 10 ft 0.8 in
Cherene, 65 x 85.8 in 10 ft 5 in x 9 ft 7.8 in 11 ft 5 in x 10 ft 1.8 in

Sleep Foundation suggests outlining the footprint with painter's tape. Our tip: tape the frame's overall size, not 60 x 80.

Can a queen bed fit in a 10x10 room?

Yes, a queen bed fits in a 10 x 10 ft room, but the side walkways get tight once you plan around the frame. Centered on one wall, a bare 60 x 80 mattress leaves exactly 30 inches each side and 40 inches at the foot. Margo leaves 28.25 inches each side and 37.5 at the foot, Lucera 28 and 35.2, and Cherene 27.5 and 34.2.

All three clear Sleep Foundation's 24 inches but miss dimensions.com's 30-inch minimum at the sides. Our view: a low platform frame is the easier fit; a four-poster also needs a ceiling check.

Who should not choose a queen: couples who each want more than 30 inches of width (a king is 16 inches wider; see our king vs. California king guide), and anyone whose room leaves under about 24 inches of walkway even around a bare 60 x 80 mattress.

What are the other queen sizes (Olympic, California and short queen)?

The other queen sizes are the Olympic, California, RV short and split queen, and Sleep Foundation calls these other versions rare next to the standard queen.

Buying a non-standard queen? Check the frame's listed max mattress size first. Lucera and Cherene list 61 x 81.1 inches; Margo lists an inner size of 62 x 81 inches.

Frequently asked questions

How wide is a queen bed in feet?

A queen mattress is 5 feet wide, or 60 inches. The frame is wider: the three queen frames in this guide list overall widths of 63.5 to 65 inches, about 5 ft 3.5 in to 5 ft 5 in. Plan walkways and nightstands around the frame width.

How long is a queen bed?

A queen mattress is 80 inches long, or 6 feet 8 inches. Sleep Foundation says people over 6 feet tall will want at least 80 inches of length, which a queen gives you. The rarer California queen stretches that to 84 inches at the same width.

How big is a queen bed in centimeters?

A standard queen mattress is 152.4 x 203.2 cm, using the exact conversion of 25.4 mm per inch. Dimensions.com rounds that to 152 x 203 cm. The queen frames in this guide list overall sizes from 161.3 x 209.6 cm (Margo) to 165.1 x 217.9 cm (Cherene).

Is a queen bed frame bigger than the mattress?

Yes. Sleep Foundation estimates a frame adds 2 to 5 inches, putting a typical queen frame at 62-65 x 82-85 inches. Our three listings run 3.5 to 5 inches wider and 2.5 to 5.8 inches longer than a 60 x 80 mattress, with the four-poster the largest.

What is the smallest room for a queen bed?

With the headboard on a wall and dimensions.com's 30-inch minimum clearance, a bare queen mattress needs about 10 ft x 9 ft 2 in; dimensions.com puts the minimum bedroom area at roughly 106 square feet. Max and Lily says at least 10 x 11 feet with 36 inches around the bed.

Our recommendation: take the overall dimensions from the frame listing, tape that footprint on your floor, and keep at least 24 inches of walkway on the open sides (Sleep Foundation's figure), or 30 inches if you follow dimensions.com. In a 10 x 10 room, Margo leaves the most walkway of our three. Then compare overall sizes across our queen beds.
